Judah gripped the steering wheel. He could hear his teeth clenching. And then he looked up into the rearview mirror and saw her. “For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.” There she was, just standing on the sidewalk. Her bright, fearful eyes caught the sun and turned to gold. Judah’s breath tangled up inside his chest. He blinked. Was she real?

“Sparrow,” Esther called out, the word spinning and tumbling in the air. Sparrow turned and ran away. Esther chased after her, but she was in too much pain. She fell to the ground.

“Sparrow,” he called.
